Press Release

Embroidery ...in Fashion

It is the aim of the professional embroider, to adorn garments with the finest embellishments, to create works of art which can be worn, and to push the boundaries of surface decoration to their limits. To the dismay of such artisans, the craft of embroidery is rarely acknowledged by designers and the media for its importance on the catwalk and remains a somewhat secretive world.

Whilst the High Street enjoys, low cost, mass produced embellishment with everything from garments, handbags, boots and shoes, the inspiration, innovation and design of how that embroidery comes about, is not often considered.

This unique conference will address the highest levels of embroidery skill and design in this little understood niche of the fashion industry.

This one day international embroidery conference, the second organised by Hand & Lock, is in collaboration with the London College of Fashion. It is to take place in London College of Fashion's Rootstein Hopkins Space at John Princes Street in central London on Saturday 8th November 2008, from 9.00am until 4.30pm. A Prize giving dinner from 6.30 thru 9.30 pm will follow the Conference.

The speakers are from:

- Professional bespoke embroidery ateliers - Hand & Lock (London) and Lesage (Paris)
- Fashion - Jade Jagger and Bruce Oldfield.
- Savile Row - Henry Poole & Co and Anderson Sheppard.
- Fashion Journalism - Tony Glenville
- Academia - Anthea Godfrey and Polly Kenny

An exhibition that runs alongside the conference, will give delegates the opportunity to see up close the Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery 2008 winning entries, back up research and design work.

In the evening, a champagne reception will begin the Prize giving dinner, giving guests the opportunity to meet with speakers, organisers and fellow delegates.
