| What
is the aim of the Prize?
The aim of this prize
is to promote the use of hand embroidered surface embellishment within
fashion, costume and interiors industries. In doing so, it is hoped
that contemporary design and fresh approaches can be matched up with
the high quality and expertise required in the professional world.

Who can enter the Prize?
Any student who is in
full or part time education on or before the 31st of March 2008, from
any country in the world. Please note that research students are not
eligible to enter.

| What
are the Prizes?
All three winners of this
prestigious prize will receive:
- 1 year free subscription
to Embroidery magazine.
- A commemorative framed
hand embroidered plaque produced by Hand & Lock's skilled craftsmen.
- Work Experience and
tambour course at the Hand & Lock workrooms in central London.
- 1 year mentoring by
the LCF - toward an exhibition (Date TBA)
- Free trip to London
for the Prize Giving and Conference
- 2008 Book of Finalists,
showing the work of all the 2nd Stage Finalists and the 1st 2nd &
3rd prize winners.
First Prize
" $15,000 USD
" Entry displayed at The Victoria and Albert Museum, and behind
the scenes tour.
" One day course at The Royal School of Needlework.
" The winning entry used on posters to promote Hand & Lock
Prize for Embroidery 2009.
" Dedicated page on the Hand & Lock website, with a biography.
Second Prize
" $2,000 USD
Third Prize
" $1,000 USD
Commendation
From time to time, the judges may award a commendation to the entrant,
whom in their opinion meets the high standards of the 3 prize winners.
Where this is the case the entrant will receive a commemorative framed
hand embroidered plaque produced by Hand & Lock's skilled craftsmen.
Second Stage
All prize winners and second stage students will have a lifetime representation
of their entry on the Hand & Lock website: www.handembroidery.com
Special College
Prize
Madeira
UK Ltd will award $1,700 USD (retail value) worth of goods to the highest
placed college or university to include the 'Hand & Lock Prize for
Embroidery' prize brief within their curriculum.

do I register?
Online: Click here
to register online. All online entrants must pay via debit cards, credit
cards or paypal. Please ensure funds are available before registering.

Offline: Complete the entry form in full
and return along with the entry fee to:

| How
can I download the competition brief
The competition brief
can be downloaded from the Brief page. It is
available in 6 different languages.

| What
are the 7 points of the brief?
Entrants
are required to;
1. Base all work entered on the following brief, entitled 'Dimension'.
2. Present embroidered samples of hand embroidery for clothing, accessories,
costume or soft furnishing.
3. Use HAND EMBROIDERY. Machine embroidery can be used, but must be
hand embellished.
4. Demonstrate how the embroidery can be applied / used, by providing
one or more of the following - finished items / garments / mock-ups
/illustrations / computer graphics.
5. Provide supporting research and sketch/idea books/sheets, with notes
that explain the thinking and ideas behind the concept.
6. Show the design development from initial concept through to realised
design.
7. Ensure that the finished product is both practical and commercially
viable.

I am through to the 2nd round. I need more information
about what to send
You will be required to
submit your actual finished work and all its support material at this
stage. All work must securely carry your name, contact telephone, email
and college details.
Each entry is limited to the size that can be mailed by the Post Office
by Recorded or Special Delivery. You can also send your entries via
courier. There should be no breakable materials e.g. glass.

can I find more information about the chairman's tour?
The Chairman's World Lecture
Tour is now in full swing. The Lecture is accompanied by a full power
point presentation, with 84 colour images, followed by a question and
answer session, at which actual samples of Hand & Lock embroidery
and embroidery materials will be shown.
Topics:
1. The origins of embroidery, and its development.
2. Gold and silver wire and military embroidery, and how lace and cords
are made.
3. An outline of techniques in hand embroidery, and the Irish and Cornely
machines.
4. A presentation of seminal embroideries eg. The Bayeux Tapestry.
5. A brief history of Hand & Lock est. 1767
6. Aims and details of the 'Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery'.
7. Contemporary embroidery and its future.
